CHARGING SYSTEM — Alternator — Disassembly (Cont'd) / Rotor Slip Ring Check / Brush Check / Stator and Diode Check / Assembly

EL-38prose procedure

Brush wear limit is the only spec actually printed here (10 mm / 0.39 in) — slip-ring min OD and brush-spring pressure live on the SDS page.

Disassembly (Cont'd)

  1. 5
Remove screws holding stator assembly to front cover (4) and separate stator from rotor.
    1. The stator field coils are soldered to the regulator/diode pack and should not be separated. Replace stator, regulator and diode pack as a complete assembly if found defective.
Stator/diode pack separation from front cover & rotor — Fixing screw callout (4 off).
    UEL041
  2. 6
Bearings can be removed using suitable bearing pullers.

Rotor Slip Ring Check

  1. 1
With Rotor/Front Cover and Stator separated, check continuity of rotor slip rings. No continuity ... Replace rotor.
Rotor slip-ring continuity test — ohmmeter probes between the two slip rings.
    UEL042
  2. 2
Insulator test. Continuity exists ... Replace rotor.
Rotor insulation test — ohmmeter probes between a slip ring and the rotor shaft.
    UEL043
  3. 3
Check slip ring for wear. Slip ring minimum outer diameter: Refer to "Service Data and Specifications".

BRUSH CHECK

  1. 1
Check brush length for wear. Replace brush if it is worn down to 10 mm (0.39 in) or below.
Brush wear gauge — A = Normal brush length, B = Minimum brush length.
    UEL044
  2. 2
Check brush spring pressure. Measure brush spring pressure with brush pressed to moulding. Spring pressure: Refer to "Service Data and Specifications". Not within the specified values ... Replace.
