Starting System - Starter - Pinion/Clutch Check / Disassembly / Brush Check / Brush Holder / Field Coil Check
EL-29prose procedurePinion/Clutch Check
- 1Remove Starter Motor.
- 2Check to see if pinion locks in one direction and rotates smoothly in the opposite direction. If it does not lock (or locks) in either direction or unusual resistance is evident... Replace.
- 3Inspect condition of pinion and ring gear teeth, replace if teeth are worn or damaged.
Starter Motor - Disassembly
- 1Remove Starter Motor.
- 2Remove back cover fixing bolts and end cap fixing screws.
- 3Separate field coil yoke from pinion gear.
- 4Separate armature and brush gear from starter/armature assembly.
NOTE
• With starter motor disassembled the following checks can be performed.
• Assembly is the reverse procedure of disassembly.
Brush Check
- 1With starter motor disassembled check wear of brushes. Wear limit length: Refer to "Service Data and Specifications". Excessive wear ... Replace by cutting brush connecting leads at their mid-point and soldering the new connectors to them. (If original brushes need cleaning, use a petrol moistened cloth.)
- 2Check brush spings and ensure brushes move backwards and forwards freely in their holders.
Brush Holder
- 1Perform insulation test between brush holder (positive side) and its base (negative side). Continuity exists ... Replace
- 2Check brush to see if it moves smoothly.
NOTE
• If brush holder is bent, replace it; if sliding surface is dirty, clean it.
Field Coil Check
- 1Continuity test (between field coil positive terminal and positive brushes). No continuity ... Replace yoke assembly.
- 2Insulation test (between field coil positive terminal and yoke). Continuity exists ... Replace yoke assembly.
