STARTING SYSTEM — Starter — Pinion/Clutch Check / Disassembly / Brush Check / Brush Holder / Field Coil Check
EL-29prose procedureBrush replacement uses solder splice at brush-lead mid-point — not full holder swap. Wear-limit length itself is on the SDS page at end of section, not here.
Pinion/Clutch Check
- 1Remove Starter Motor.
- 2Check to see if pinion locks in one direction and rotates smoothly in the opposite direction.
- If it does not lock (or locks) in either direction or unusual resistance is evident... Replace.
UEL029 - 3Inspect condition of pinion and ring gear teeth, replace if teeth are worn or damaged.
STARTER MOTOR — Disassembly
- 1Remove Starter Motor.
- 2Remove back cover fixing bolts and end cap fixing screws.
UEL030 - 3Separate field coil yoke from pinion gear.
- 4Separate armature and brush gear from starter/armature assembly.
NOTE
• With starter motor disassembled the following checks can be performed.
• Assembly is the reverse procedure of disassembly.
Brush Check
- 1With starter motor disassembled check wear of brushes. Wear limit length: Refer to "Service Data and Specifications".
- Excessive wear ... Replace by cutting brush connecting leads at their mid-point and soldering the new connectors to them. (If original brushes need cleaning, use a petrol moistened cloth.)
- With starter motor disassembled check brush spring tension.
UEL031 - 2Check brush springs and ensure brushes move backwards and forwards freely in their holders.
Brush Holder
- 1Perform insulation test between brush holder (positive side) and its base (negative side). Continuity exists ... Replace.
SEL568B - 2Check to see if it moves smoothly. If brush holder is bent, replace it; if sliding surface is dirty, clean it.
Field Coil Check
- 1Continuity test (between field coil positive terminal and positive brushes). No continuity ... Replace yoke assembly.
SEL102E - 2Insulation test (between field coil positive terminal and yoke). Continuity exists ... Replace yoke assembly.
