STARTING SYSTEM — Starter — Pinion/Clutch Check / Disassembly / Brush Check / Brush Holder / Field Coil Check

EL-29prose procedure

Brush replacement uses solder splice at brush-lead mid-point — not full holder swap. Wear-limit length itself is on the SDS page at end of section, not here.

Pinion/Clutch Check

  1. 1
    Remove Starter Motor.
  2. 2
Check to see if pinion locks in one direction and rotates smoothly in the opposite direction.
    1. If it does not lock (or locks) in either direction or unusual resistance is evident... Replace.
Pinion/Clutch check — over-running clutch test: rotate pinion in both directions to confirm one-way lockup.
    UEL029
  3. 3
Inspect condition of pinion and ring gear teeth, replace if teeth are worn or damaged.

STARTER MOTOR — Disassembly

  1. 1
    Remove Starter Motor.
  2. 2
Remove back cover fixing bolts and end cap fixing screws.
Starter disassembly — back-cover fixing bolts callout and 'starter/armature assembly' label indicating the separated armature + brush gear sub-assembly.
    UEL030
  3. 3
Separate field coil yoke from pinion gear.
  4. 4
Separate armature and brush gear from starter/armature assembly.

Brush Check

  1. 1
With starter motor disassembled check wear of brushes. Wear limit length: Refer to "Service Data and Specifications".
    1. Excessive wear ... Replace by cutting brush connecting leads at their mid-point and soldering the new connectors to them. (If original brushes need cleaning, use a petrol moistened cloth.)
    2. With starter motor disassembled check brush spring tension.
Brush wear check — gauge with 'new length' and 'minimum length' references against an isolated brush.
    UEL031
  2. 2
Check brush springs and ensure brushes move backwards and forwards freely in their holders.

Brush Holder

  1. 1
Perform insulation test between brush holder (positive side) and its base (negative side). Continuity exists ... Replace.
Brush-holder insulation test — ohmmeter probes between positive-side holder and negative base. No continuity required.
    SEL568B
  2. 2
Check to see if it moves smoothly. If brush holder is bent, replace it; if sliding surface is dirty, clean it.

Field Coil Check

  1. 1
Continuity test (between field coil positive terminal and positive brushes). No continuity ... Replace yoke assembly.
Field-coil checks — yoke shown with positive brushes; ohmmeter between (1) field-coil positive terminal and positive brush (continuity required), and (2) field-coil positive terminal and yoke body (no continuity required).
    SEL102E
  2. 2
Insulation test (between field coil positive terminal and yoke). Continuity exists ... Replace yoke assembly.
