STARTING SYSTEM — Starter — Pinion/Clutch Check, Disassembly, Brush/Holder/Field Coil Checks (Base K11)

EL-29prose procedure

Base K11 STARTING SYSTEM — bench checks after disassembly: pinion/clutch one-way lock test, disassembly steps, brush wear (cut+solder new connectors, wear limit per SDS), brush-holder insulation, field-coil continuity+insulation (NG → replace yoke assembly). Figs UEL029-031, SEL568B, SEL102E.

Pinion/clutch check

  1. 1
    Remove Starter Motor.
  2. 2
Check to see if pinion locks in one direction and rotates smoothly in the opposite direction. If it does not lock (or locks) in either direction or unusual resistance is evident.... Replace.
  3. 3
Inspect condition of pinion and ring gear teeth, replace if teeth are worn or damaged.

STARTER MOTOR — Disassembly

Starter disassembly

  1. 1
    Remove Starter Motor.
  2. 2
Remove back cover fixing bolts and end cap fixing screws.
  3. 3
Separate field coil yoke from pinion gear.
  4. 4
Separate armature and brush gear from starter/armature assembly.

Brush check

  1. 1
With starter motor disassembled check wear of brushes. Wear limit length: Refer to 'Service Data and Specifications'.
  2. 2
Excessive wear ... Replace by cutting brush connecting leads at their mid-point and soldering the new connectors to them. (If original brushes need cleaning, use a petrol moistened cloth.)
  3. 3
Check brush springs and ensure brushes move backwards and forwards freely in their holders.

Brush Holder

Brush holder check

  1. 1
Perform insulation test between brush holder (positive side) and its base (negative side). Continuity exists ... Replace.
  2. 2
Check brush to see if it moves smoothly. If brush holder is bent, replace it; if sliding surface is dirty, clean it.

Field coil check

  1. 1
Continuity test (between field coil positive terminal and positive brushes). No continuity ... Replace yoke assembly.
  2. 2
Insulation test (between field coil positive terminal and yoke). Continuity exists ... Replace yoke assembly.
