Armature Check

    Test continuity between adjoining segments. No continuity ... Replace.
    Armature continuity test — ohmmeter probes between two adjoining commutator segments.

    Insulation test (between each commutator bar and shaft). Continuity exists ... Replace.
    Armature insulation test — ohmmeter probes between a commutator bar and the armature shaft.

    Check commutator surface. Check the armature and commutator for wear or damage. A dirty or burned surface may be cleaned with fine grade emery paper.
    Commutator surface dressing — fine-grade emery paper applied to the commutator while rotated by hand.

    Check diameter of commutator. Commutator minimum diameter: Refer to "Service Data and Specifications". Less than specified value ... Replace.
    Commutator outer-diameter measurement with vernier caliper.
