CHARGING SYSTEM — Alternator — Removal / Refitting (cars with P/S and/or A/C)
EL-36prose procedureRemoval sequence assumes P/S and/or A/C are fitted — single serpentine belt routing means alternator can only come off after the idler is slackened. Cars without P/S or A/C use a different procedure (likely simpler V-belt).
Removal (for cars fitted with Power Steering and/or Air Conditioning)
- 1Remove battery negative lead from battery.
- 2From beneath car remove front and RHS splash guards.
- 3Loosen idler pulley nut (17 mm).
UEL035 - 4Slacken belt by turning adjusting bolt clockwise (access from topside of engine - 12 mm).
UEL036 - 5Remove power supply cable.
- 6Disconnect harness connector.
- 7Remove lower alternator mounting bolts (2 x 14 mm).
UEL037 - 8Remove upper alternator mounting bolt (14 mm) and remove alternator.
Refitting
NOTE
• Refit alternator using the reverse procedure to removal.
• Tighten fixing bolts to the torque specified.
• Tighten drive belt by turning adjusting bolt in anti-clockwise direction (Refer to MA section for full details of belt tensioning).
• When belt is correctly tensioned tighten idler pulley bolt to torque specified.
