CHARGING SYSTEM — Alternator — Removal / Refitting (cars with P/S and/or A/C)

EL-36prose procedure

Removal sequence assumes P/S and/or A/C are fitted — single serpentine belt routing means alternator can only come off after the idler is slackened. Cars without P/S or A/C use a different procedure (likely simpler V-belt).

Removal (for cars fitted with Power Steering and/or Air Conditioning)

  1. 1
Remove battery negative lead from battery.
  2. 2
From beneath car remove front and RHS splash guards.
  3. 3
Loosen idler pulley nut (17 mm).

  4. 4
Slacken belt by turning adjusting bolt clockwise (access from topside of engine - 12 mm).

  5. 5
    Remove power supply cable.
  6. 6
    Disconnect harness connector.
  7. 7
Remove lower alternator mounting bolts (2 x 14 mm).
Alternator on engine showing upper and lower mounting-bolt torques 37-50 N·m (3.8-5.1 kg-m) each.

  8. 8
Remove upper alternator mounting bolt (14 mm) and remove alternator.
