STARTING SYSTEM — Starter — Yoke Assembly Check + Armature Check (Base K11)
EL-30prose procedureBase K11 STARTING SYSTEM — yoke (permanent-magnet field, check for cracks) + armature bench checks (segment continuity, bar-to-shaft insulation, commutator surface cleaning, commutator diameter vs SDS minimum). Figs SEL305H, SEL203P-206P.
Yoke Assembly Check
Check magnet for cracks and replace malfunctioning parts as an assembly.
Armature check
- 1Test continuity between adjoining segments. No continuity ... Replace.
- 2Insulation test (between each commutator bar and shaft). Continuity exists ... Replace.
- 3Check commutator surface. Check the armature and commutator for wear or damage. A dirty or burned surface may be cleaned with fine grade emery paper.
- 4Check diameter of commutator. Commutator minimum diameter: Refer to 'Service Data and Specifications'. Less than specified value ... Replace.
NOTE
Armature bench checks: (1) adjoining commutator segments must have continuity (winding intact); (2) commutator bar ↔ shaft must NOT have continuity (no short to ground); (3) clean dirty/burned commutator with fine emery; (4) measure commutator diameter with vernier caliper — below SDS minimum → replace. Yoke (magnet-type field) is checked for magnet cracks and replaced as an assembly.
