Diagnostic Procedure 21 — Afterburning

Check ignition system. • Check for operation. Refer to "Ignition Signal" (See page EF&EC-140).

Check power transistor signal, ignition signal, crank angle sensor signal and periphery circuits. Refer to "Ignition Signal". (See page EF&EC-140)

1. Check spark gaps. • Turn ignition switch to "OFF". • Remove spark plugs. • Install new or good spark plugs. • While moving rear end of each spark plug close to grounding point, crank engine. • Check for sparks.

Check ignition coil, power transistor and related circuits. Refer to "Ignition Signal". (See page EF&EC-140)

2. Check spark plugs. • Remove spark plugs from engine and check for contaminants, damage and proper spark gaps.

Repair or replace.

3. Check air intake for leaks. • Start engine. • Check to ensure engine speed increases when blow-by hose is pinched with fingers.

Repair areas where air leaks.

4. Check injectors. • Stop engine. • Remove distributor. (Do not remove crank angle sensor harness connector.) • Remove power transistor connector. • Turn ignition switch to "ON". • Check to ensure each injector emits hissing sound when crankshaft is hand-rotated. Display shows an erratic indication during self-diagnosis and does not show abnormalities.
