Cylinder block assembly (continued)

    Measure crankshaft end play. Crankshaft end play: Standard 0.060 - 0.26 mm (0.0024 - 0.0102 in). Limit 0.3 mm (0.012 in). If beyond the limit, replace thrust bearing with a new one.
    Dial indicator mounted on cylinder block, stylus on crankshaft end face, measuring crankshaft end-play (axial movement) while crankshaft is pried fore-and-aft.

    Install connecting rod bearings in connecting rods and connecting rod caps.
    Confirm that correct bearings are used. Refer to "Inspection".
    Big-end of connecting rod with cap removed; callout points to a multi-digit number stamped on the rod boss. Caption: "Connecting rod number".

    Install pistons with connecting rods.
    Be careful not to scratch cylinder wall by connecting rod.
    Arrange so that front mark on piston head faces toward front of engine.
    1. Install them into corresponding cylinders with Tool (piston ring compressor).
      Hand pushing a piston/connecting rod assembly into a cylinder bore using a piston ring compressor wrapped around the piston; cylinder block in cross-section. Callout: "Piston ring compressor".

    2. Install connecting rod bearing caps. Tighten connecting rod bearing cap nuts to the specified torque. Connecting rod bearing nut: (1) Tighten to 14 to 16 N·m (1.4 to 1.6 kg-m, 10 to 12 ft-lb). (2) Turn nuts to 45° to 50° degrees clockwise with an angle wrench.
      Torque wrench applied to a connecting rod bearing cap nut from below the block; arrow indicates rotation. Used for both initial torque and angle-torque steps (1)(2).

    Measure connecting rod side clearance. Connecting rod side clearance: Standard 0.200 - 0.470 mm (0.0079 - 0.0185 in). Limit 0.55 mm (0.0217 in). If beyond the limit, replace connecting rod and/or crankshaft.
    Feeler gauge being inserted between connecting rod big-end and crankshaft counterweight to measure connecting rod side clearance.
