CYLINDER HEAD — Inspection (Cont'd) — Valve Dimensions, Spring, Lifter (Supplement-V)

EM-5024prose procedure

Inspection (Cont'd)

Valve dimensions

  1. 1
Check dimensions of each valve. For dimensions, refer to SDS (EM-5047).
Valve cross-section showing key dimensions: T (margin thickness) at the top, α (valve face angle), D (head diameter), L (overall length), d (stem diameter) — referenced for SDS dimensions.
    SEM188A
  2. 2
Correct or replace any valve that is faulty.
  3. 3
Valve face or valve stem end surface should be refaced by using a valve grinder.
Bench-mounted valve grinder being used to grind a valve face — illustrates step 3 (reface valve face/stem end with valve grinder).
    EM111
  4. 4
Measure distance from cylinder head surface to intake and exhaust valves. If specified distance is exceeded, replace valve(s) or valve seat(s).
    Specified distance — Standard: Intake 0.85 - 1.19 mm (0.033 - 0.047 in); Exhaust 1.05 - 1.39 mm (0.041 - 0.055 in).
Cross-section of cylinder head with intake and exhaust valves seated; arrows show measurement from the cylinder head deck surface down to the valve head crowns to verify recess distance. Labels 'Intake' and 'Exhaust' on the left.

VALVE SPRING PRESSURE LOAD

VALVE LIFTER

Valve lifter inspection

  1. 1
Check contact and sliding surfaces for wear or scratches.
Valve lifter (bucket tappet) with arrows pointing at the crown (cam-contact face) and side wall (bore-contact face) — inspect for wear / scratches.
    SEM160D
Valve recess from head surface — Intake (standard)Measured to valve head crown
0.85 - 1.19 (0.033 - 0.047)mm (in)
Valve recess from head surface — Exhaust (standard)Measured to valve head crown
1.05 - 1.39 (0.041 - 0.055)mm (in)
