CYLINDER HEAD — Cautions and Removal (Supplement-V)

After removing timing belt, do not turn crankshaft and camshaft separately, or valves will strike piston heads.
When installing camshaft, oil seals or valve lifters, lubricate contacting surfaces with new engine oil.
Removal
Cylinder head — Removal
- 1Drain coolant from radiator and cylinder block. Be careful not to spill coolant on drive belt.
- 2Remove timing belt. Refer to "TIMING BELT", (EM-5012).
- 3Disconnect front exhaust pipe from manifold.
NEM272 - 4Remove injection tubes.
- 5Disconnect spill hose, glow plug cable, EGR hose and coolant temperature sensor connectors.
- 6Remove air duct and air cleaner.
- 7Disconnect vacuum hoses, coolant hoses, fuel hoses from thermostat housing and vacuum pump.
- 8Remove intake manifold support and dipstick tube bolt.
- 9Disconnect fast idle device wire from injection pump.
- 10Remove rocker cover bolts in numerical order as shown in the figure.
NEM273 - 11Remove cylinder head bolts in numerical order as shown in the figure.Head warpage or cracking could result from removing in incorrect order.Cylinder head bolts should be loosened in two or three stages.
NEM274 - 12Remove cylinder head complete with manifolds.
