Crankshaft runout

    Measure crankshaft runout. Runout (Total indicator reading): Less than 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).
    Crankshaft mounted between V-blocks with dial indicator on a center main journal measuring runout while crankshaft is rotated.

    Set main bearings in their proper positions on cylinder block and main bearing cap.
    Set of main bearing shells laid out in order with callouts: Upper bearing, Thrust bearing (only upper), No. 5 bearing, Oil hole, Lower bearing, Identification color, Oil groove, No. 1 bearing, Front (arrow). Five sets total.

    Install main bearing cap to cylinder block.
    Tighten all bolts in correct order in two or three stages.
    Cylinder block with main bearing cap (beam) installed; a bore gauge measuring the inner diameter of a main bearing in situ.

    Measure inner diameter of each main bearing.

    Measure outer diameter of each main journal in crankshaft.
    Crankshaft main journal being measured for outer diameter with a micrometer.

    Calculate main bearing clearance. Main bearing clearance = Inner dia. − Outer dia. Standard: 0.022 - 0.038 mm (0.0009 - 0.0015 in). Limit: 0.064 mm (0.0025 in).

    If it exceeds the limit, replace bearing.
  7. 7
    If clearance cannot be adjusted within the standard of any bearing, grind crankshaft journal and use undersized bearing.
