CYLINDER BLOCK — Inspection (Cont'd) / Piston Ring Side Clearance / Ring End Gap / Connecting Rod Bend and Torsion

EM-47prose procedure

Inspection (Cont'd)

Piston and piston pin clearance (continued)

  1. 2
Measure outer diameter of piston pin. Standard diameter: 17.994 - 18.000 mm (0.7084 - 0.7087 in).
Hands using a micrometer to measure the outer diameter of a piston pin. Label: Micrometer.
    SEM821B
  2. 3
Calculate piston pin clearance. Piston pin hole inner diameter − Piston pin outer diameter: 0.004 to 0.016 mm (0.0002 - 0.0006 in). If it exceeds the above value, replace piston assembly with pin.
Piston pin outer diameter — StandardStandard
17.994 - 18.000 (0.7084 - 0.7087)mm (in)
Piston pin clearance (pin hole I.D. − pin O.D.)Replace piston assembly if exceeded
0.004 - 0.016 (0.0002 - 0.0006)mm (in)

PISTON RING SIDE CLEARANCE

Side clearance — Top ringStandard
0.050 - 0.073 (0.0020 - 0.0029)mm (in)
Side clearance — 2nd ringStandard
0.030 - 0.070 (0.0012 - 0.0028)mm (in)
Max. limit of side clearanceReplace piston and/or ring assembly if exceeded
0.2 (0.008)mm (in)
If out of specification, replace piston and/or piston ring assembly.

PISTON RING END GAP

End gap — Top ringStandard
0.20 - 0.30 (0.0079 - 0.0118)mm (in)
End gap — 2nd ringStandard
0.30 - 0.45 (0.0118 - 0.0177)mm (in)
End gap — Oil ringStandard
0.25 - 1.0 (0.0098 - 0.0394)mm (in)
Max. limit of ring gap — Top ringWear limit
0.37 (0.0146)mm (in)
Max. limit of ring gap — 2nd ringWear limit
0.54 (0.0213)mm (in)
Max. limit of ring gap — Oil ringWear limit
1.09 (0.0429)mm (in)
If out of specification, replace piston ring. If gap still exceeds the limit even with a new ring, rebore cylinder and use oversized piston and piston rings. Refer to S.D.S.

CONNECTING ROD BEND AND TORSION

Bend limitLimit
0.15 (0.0059) per 100 mm (3.94 in) lengthmm (in)
Torsion limitLimit
0.3 (0.012) per 100 mm (3.94 in) lengthmm (in)
If it exceeds the limit, replace connecting rod assembly.
