CYLINDER BLOCK — Connecting Rod Bearings; Small-End Clearance; Determining the Piston Type (Supplement-V)
EM-5041prose procedureSource step 1 of 'Determining the piston type' uses the spelling 'main bearings caps' (matching the same source-side spelling preserved on EM-5036).
Inspection (Cont'd)
Connecting rod bearing (Big end) — clearance (continued)
- 4Measure outer diameter of each crankshaft pin journal.
SEM506A - 5Calculate connecting rod bearing clearance. Connecting rod bearing clearance = Inner dia. − Outer dia.Standard: 0.010 - 0.044 mm (0.0004 - 0.0017 in)
- 6If it exceeds the standard clearance, replace bearing.
- 7If clearance cannot be adjusted with the standard bearing, grind crankshaft journal and use undersized bearing. Refer to step 7 of "BEARING CLEARANCE − Main bearing".
Connecting rod bearing thickness
Standard
Thickness1.814 - 1.820 (0.071 - 0.072)
Undersize
Thickness1.964 - 1.970 (0.077 - 0.078)
Connecting rod clearance (Small end)
- 1Measure inner diameter of connecting rod small end.Standard: 23.007 - 23.02 mm (0.9058 - 0.9063 in)
SEM151B - 2Measure outer diameter of piston pin.Standard: 22.996 - 23.000 mm (0.9054 - 0.9055 in)
SEM903A - 3Calculate connecting rod bushing clearance. Connecting rod bushing clearance = Inner diameter − pin outer diameter. If it exceeds the standard clearance, replace connecting rod assembly and/or piston and pin.Standard: 0.011 - 0.02 mm (0.0004 - 0.0008 in)
DETERMINING THE PISTON TYPE
NOTE
When replacing pistons, crankshaft, cylinder block or connecting rods always determine piston type.
Determining the piston type
- 1Install crankshaft with correct bearings and tighten main bearings caps to the specified torque.
- 2Mount the No. 4 cylinder connecting rod on the calibration piston SST KV109B0050.
NEM300 - 3Install a new pair of connecting rod bearings.
- 4Install the calibration piston with connecting rod in the corresponding cylinder.
