VALVE CLEARANCE — Checking / Adjusting

EM-36prose procedure

Checking

Valve clearance checking

  1. 1
    Remove rocker cover.
  2. 2
    Remove all spark plugs.
  3. 3
Set No. 1 cylinder at T.D.C. on its compression stroke. Align pointer with T.D.C. mark on crankshaft pulley.
Crankshaft pulley front-face showing TDC reference marks for setting No. 1 cylinder on compression stroke. Marks labelled left-to-right: 5° ATDC, TDC, BTDC 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°. A pointer at top indicates the pulley pointer position.

  4. 4
Check that valve lifters on No. 1 cylinder are loose and valve lifters on No. 4 are tight. If not, turn crankshaft one revolution (360°) and align as above. Check only those valves shown in the figure.
Top view of cylinder head showing cam-on-base-circle pattern with No. 1 cylinder at TDC compression. Valves to be checked are highlighted: Intake (INT) at positions 1, 2 (cylinder #1) and 5, 6 (cylinder #3); Exhaust (EXH) at positions 1, 2 (cylinder #1) and 7, 8 (cylinder #4). Numbered 1–8 across the head.

  5. 5
Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between valve lifter and camshaft. Record any valve clearance measurements which are out of specification. They will be used later to determine the required replacement adjusting shim. Valve clearance for checking (Hot): Intake — 0.32 - 0.40 mm (0.0126 - 0.0157 in); Exhaust — 0.36 - 0.44 mm (0.0142 - 0.0173 in).
Hand using a feeler gauge between cam lobe and valve lifter shim on the cylinder head to measure valve clearance. View shows cam and lifter from above with feeler blade inserted.

  6. 6
Turn crankshaft one revolution (360°) and align mark on crankshaft pulley with pointer. Check those valves shown in the figure. Use the same procedure as mentioned in step 4. If all valve clearances are within specification, install the following parts. Rocker cover. All spark plugs.
Top view of cylinder head showing the second check position after rotating crankshaft 360°. Valves to be checked are highlighted at the complementary positions: Intake (INT) at 3, 4 and 7, 8; Exhaust (EXH) at 3, 4 and 5, 6.

Adjusting

Valve clearance adjusting

  1. 1
Turn crankshaft, to position cam lobe on camshaft of valve that must be adjusted upward.
  2. 2
Place Tool (A) around camshaft as shown in figure. Before placing Tool (A), rotate notch toward center of cylinder head (See figure.), to simplify shim removal later.
Be careful not to damage cam surface with Tool (A).
Special service tool KV10115110 (valve lifter shim tool) being placed around the camshaft on the cylinder head. Callouts: "Tool (A) KV10115110" with arrow showing placement around camshaft.
