Piston assembly

  1. Align the direction of piston and connecting rod, the piston cloverleaf sits opposite the bearing halfshell retainers.
    Piston with connecting rod attached. Piston crown labelled 'Piston height type' (location of the printed-on type letter A/B/C) and 'Clover leaf' (the cloverleaf-shaped combustion-chamber recess). Connecting rod has 'Bearing retainers' callout pointing at the cap-side bearing locking-tab pocket. Indicates the cloverleaf must sit opposite the bearing halfshell retainers (i.e. the bearing tabs face the opposite side of the engine from the cloverleaf).

  2. Install new snap ring on one side of piston pin hole.
  3. Install new snap ring.
  4. After assembling, ascertain that piston swings smoothly.
  5. Confirm that the correct piston height type is used. Refer to "Inspection" (EM-5042).
  6. Install piston rings with a suitable tool.
    a) When installing pistong rings, make sure that stamped mark "TOP" is facing top of piston.
    b) Align gaps of piston rings with intervals of 120°, as shown in illustration.
