Timing Chain — Removal

• After removing timing chain, do not turn crankshaft and camshaft separately, or valves will strike piston heads.
Removal
- 1Drain engine coolant from radiator and cylinder block. Be careful not to spill coolant on drive belts.
- 2Remove the alternator and power steering drive belts.
UEM043 - 3Remove air cleaner.
- 4Remove front right-side wheel.
- 5Remove front and right-side splashguards.
- 6Remove front exhaust [tube/manifold].Right end of line partially obscured by scan smudge; word likely 'tube'.
- 7Remove rocker cover.Loosen rocker cover bolts in numerical order (see figure).
NEM041 - 8Remove distributor cap.
- 9Remove all spark plugs.
- 10Set No. 1 piston at T.D.C. on compression stroke. • Make sure No. 1 cylinder is at T.D.C. by looking at distributor rotor position.
UEM045 - 11Remove distributor.
SEM110D - 12Remove cam sprocket cover.
