TIMING BELT — Tensioner/Idler Inspection, Installation, Pretensioning (Supplement-V)

EM-5014prose procedure

"SEEM units" is the proprietary scale of the SEEM belt-tension gauge (KV109B0030) — common on diesel timing-belt installations of this era.

Belt tensioner and idler

Belt tensioner and idler inspection

  1. 1
Check belt tensioner and idler for smooth turning.
Hand spinning a tensioner/idler pulley by hand to check for smooth rotation — illustrates 'Check belt tensioner and idler for smooth turning'.

Installation

Timing belt — Installation

  1. 1
Loosen the camshaft and injection pump sprocket bolts slightly.
  2. 2
Check that the sprockets rotate freely on their hubs.
  3. 3
Turn the sprockets in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise) to the end of their slots.
Point arrow on timing belt towards engine rotation (clockwise).
Front of engine with arrows indicating clockwise rotation of camshaft and injection-pump sprockets to the end of their hub slots — illustrates installation steps 1–3.

  4. 4
Install timing belt in the following order beginning at the crankshaft over the idler pulley to the injection pump sprocket.
Front of engine with two views: (left) full belt routing, (right) close-up of an injection-pump sprocket being rotated slightly anti-clockwise (CC arrow) to engage the timing belt teeth — illustrates installation steps 4–6.

  5. 5
Turn the injection pump sprocket slightly anti-clockwise to engage the timing belt teeth.
  6. 6
Follow the same procedure for the camshaft sprocket.
Angular travel of the sprocket, with respect to the timing belt, must not be greater than one belt tooth.
  7. 7
Engage the belt on the tensioner pulley and water pump.

Pretensioning the timing belt

Pretensioning the timing belt

  1. 1
Install SST KV109B0030 on the edge of the belt. Take care not to obstruct any other component. Tighten the screw on the tool until a loud click is heard.
Front of engine with SST KV109B0030 belt tension gauge installed on the edge of the belt and SST KV109B0080 tensioner lever fitted to the tensioner pulley — illustrates pretensioning steps 1–2. Callouts label both SST tools.
    NEM258
  2. 2
Rotate the tensioner counter-clockwise to obtain a reading of: 98 SEEM units for a new belt; 75 SEEM units for a used belt. Tighten the tensioner's nut to the specified torque. Remove SST KV109B0030.
