    Insert pinion mate shaft.
    When inserting, be careful not to damage pinion mate thrust washers.
    Two hands inserting the pinion mate shaft into the differential case after the pinion mate gears and side gears are seated.

    RS5F30A — Measure clearance between side gear and differential case with washers following the procedure below.
    Special tool KV38105900 (RS5F30A side-gear measurement fixture) holding the differential, with a dial gauge mounted on top reading off the side gear.

    Set Tool and dial indicator on side gear.
  4. 3b-rs5f30a
    Move side gear up and down to measure dial indicator deflection. Always measure indicator deflection on both side gears.
    Clearance between side gear and differential case with washers: 0.3 mm (0.012 in) or less
    Hands moving the side gear up and down through the fixture aperture to read dial-indicator deflection (RS5F30A clearance check).

    If not within specification, adjust clearance by changing thickness of side gear thrust washers.
    Side gear thrust washer: Refer to S.D.S.

    RS5F31V — Measure clearance between side gear and differential case & viscous coupling with washers using the following procedure.
    RS5F31V differential-case-side clearance measurement: dial indicator mounted on top of the case probes the side gear face.

    Differential case side — Set Tool and dial indicator on side gear.

    Move side gear up and down to measure dial indicator deflection.
    Clearance between side gear and differential case with washers: 0.2 mm (0.008 in) or less
    Special tool KV38107700 (RS5F31V viscous-coupling-side fixture) supporting the assembly upside-down with dial indicator reading on the side gear.
