DISASSEMBLY

Mainshaft disassembly

  1. 1
    Before disassembly, measure gear end play.
    Measure end play to insure that it is within the specified limit.
    If end play is not within the specified limit, disassemble and check the parts.
    Replace any part which is worn or damaged.
    Mainshaft held in a fixture with a thickness gauge inserted to measure end play between a gear and its mating face. Callouts: 'Gear', 'End play', 'Thickness gauge'.

    Remove mainshaft bearing, 5th synchronizer and 5th gear.
    Mainshaft pressed in a fixture; press/special tool ('Tool') removing the mainshaft bearing and 5th gear (callout '5th gear' visible). Setup uses press blocks under the gear.

    Remove 5th gear bushing, 4th gear and snap ring.
    Mainshaft held by hand; snap-ring pliers removing the snap ring above the 5th gear bushing.

    Remove 3rd & 4th synchronizer and 3rd gear.
    Mainshaft in a press fixture with the 3rd & 4th synchronizer shown to the side at its setting position; press tool engages the shaft to remove 3rd & 4th synchronizer and 3rd gear.
