DISASSEMBLY

Final-drive disassembly

    Remove pinion mate shaft circlip and pinion mate shaft.
    Differential / final-drive case shown vertically, ring gear at the bottom. A pick or punch is being used through the side window of the case to drive out the pinion-mate shaft circlip / pin. A loose circlip-style ring sits on top of the case.

    Remove pinion mate gears, thrust washers, side gears and spacer.
    Exploded view of the differential internals above the case: two pinion mate gears flanked by thrust washers, two side gears with their thrust washers, and a centre spacer, separated and laid out around the differential case.

    Remove speedometer drive gear.
    Differential case with the speedometer drive gear at the top being removed; a flat-blade lever / pry tool inserted between the speedometer gear and case from the upper-left.

    Remove differential side bearing inner races.
    Bearing-puller bridge (special tool KV32910030) hooked under the differential side-bearing inner race and pulling it off the case axle. Three threaded jacking screws on top of the bridge are turned to draw the bearing upward.

INSPECTION

Final-drive inspection

  1. 1
    Check differential case, side gears, pinion mate gears, thrust washers and final gear for excessive wear, chips or cracks. Replace if necessary.
    Differential case shown vertically with arrows / wear indicators marking the pinion mate gears, thrust washers, side gears and final gear. The whole assembly is laid out to show the inspection points called out in step 1.
