Mainshaft and Gears (Cont'd)

Baulk ring inspection (continued)

  1. 2
Place baulk ring in position on gauge cone. While holding baulk ring against gear as far as it will go, measure gap between baulk ring and outer gear. If the clearance is smaller than the wear limit, discard baulk ring.
    Baulk ring to gear clearance — Standard: 0.95 - 1.35 mm (0.0374 - 0.0531 in).
Wear limit: Less than 0.7 mm (0.028 in).
Baulk ring placed on a gauge cone (gear). Hand holds the baulk ring down against the gear; arrow shows the gap (baulk ring to gear clearance) being measured between the baulk ring and the outer gear teeth.

Bearing inspection

  1. 1
    Thoroughly clean bearing.
  2. 2
Check bearings for wear, scratches, pitching or flaking. Check tapered roller bearing for a burned out portion as shown in the figure below. If damaged, replace outer and inner races as a set.
