Butyl seal is heat-sensitive — both removal and installation use the heat gun to soften the bead. Corner thinning is the most common quality issue on rear-combination-lamp re-installation.

(15) Rear combination lamp

Rear combination lamp — Removal

  1. 1
    Warm up lamp assembly area to a temperature slightly below 60°C (140°F).
    Removal — heat-gun applied to the rear-combination-lamp aperture from outside; butyl-seal bead is highlighted along the lamp perimeter.

    Remove fastening nuts and detach the lamp assembly while the butyl seal is soft.

Rear combination lamp — Installation

  1. 1
    Apply butyl seal evenly as it tends to become thin in the corners.
    Installation — heat-gun applied to the lamp aperture with the butyl-seal bead in place.

    Warm up lamp assembly area to a temperature slightly below 60°C (140°F).

    Seat the lamp assembly and torque the fastening nuts.
Working temperature
slightly below 60°C
