REAR DRUM BRAKE — Inspection — Lining / Installation

Linings are asymmetric: leading 4.5 mm vs trailing 3.0 mm standard. Adjuster orientation is wheel-side-specific (LH vs RH) — fitting the wrong handed adjuster will cause the self-adjuster to back off rather than tighten.

3.0mm (0.1181 in)

Installation

  1. 1
    Apply brake grease to the contact areas shown at left.
    Backplate inboard face with arrows pointing at the six shoe-contact pads where brake grease must be applied.

    Shorten adjuster by rotating it.
    Adjuster-assembly orientation: top half labelled 'For R.H. brake', bottom half 'For L.H. brake'; vehicle-front arrow at left shows that the adjusting screw end points opposite ways on left and right wheels.

    Connect parking brake cable to operating lever.
  4. 4
    Apply brake grease where adjuster assembly contacts operating lever.
    Step 4: arrow points at the contact area between adjuster assembly and operating lever where brake grease must be applied.

    Install all parts.

    Check all parts are installed properly.
    Step 6 verification: full assembled backplate showing adjuster, operating lever and parking-brake cable; 'Direction of rotation' arrow at top-left and 'Front' arrow at bottom-left orient the parts on the vehicle.

    Install brake drum.

    When installing new wheel cylinder, bleed air. Refer to "Bleeding procedure" in "AIR BLEEDING".
