POWER STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE
ST-24prose procedureInstallation (Cont'd)
- 1When fitting lower joint ensure upper slit is aligned with steering column cut-out and lower slit aligns with plastic guide plate.
UST029 - 2Ensure upper bolt fits through cut-out portion of column and the lower bolt fits through the cut-out in the plastic guide on the pinion. Fit both bolts loosely. Then tighten lower bolt to specified torque first, followed by upper bolt.
- 3Tighten nuts on tie-rod outer socket and knuckle arms to 29 to 39 N·m (3 to 4 kg-m, 22 to 29 ft-lb) and fit new split pin.
UST038 - 4Fill reservoir with the recommended fluid and turn steering wheel several times in both directions with the engine off. Add fluid if level drops and repeat procedure until the fluid level settles.
UST039 - 5Start engine and run at idle speed; top up fluid level if required and turn steering wheel backwards and forwards until fluid level settles and bubbles disappear.
- 6Check system to ensure all connections and lines are free from leaks.
- 7After installation turn the steering wheel to make sure it moves smoothly and that the number of turns from the straight forward position to left and right locks are equal. Be sure that the steering wheel is in a neutral position when driving straight ahead.
