ENGINE MAINTENANCE — Checking Drive Belts

Different belt deflection specs depend on accessory configuration (with/without power steering and air conditioning).

Checking Drive Belts

  1. 1
    Inspect drive belts for cracks, fraying, wear or oil adhesion. If necessary, replace with a new one.
  2. 2
    Inspect drive belt deflections by pushing on the belt midway between pulleys.

All models: Adjustment of waterpump drive belt

  1. 1
    Remove splash guards.
  2. 2
    Slacken tensioner idler locking nut from below.
  3. 3
    Move tensioning idler by turning adjusting bolt from below, until desired belt deflection is obtained.
  4. 4
    Tighten tensioner idler locking nut.
  5. 5
    Install splash guards.

Models without powersteering and without airconditioning: Adjustment of alternator drive belt

  1. 1
    Release all three alternator fixing bolts.
  2. 2
    Tilt alternator by turning the adjusting bolt until desired belt deflection is obtained.
  3. 3
    Tighten alternator fixing bolts to specified torque. ◊: 38.0 - 50.9 N·m (3.87 - 5.19 kg·m, 28.0 - 37.5 ft·lb)

Models with powersteering or airconditioning, or both: Adjustment of alternator drive belt

  1. 1
    Remove splash guards.
  2. 2
    Slacken tensioner idler locking nut from below.
  3. 3
    Move tensioning idler by turning adjusting bolt with a 12 mm socket from top, until desired belt deflection is obtained.
  4. 4
    Tighten tensioning idler locking nut.
  5. 5
    Install splash guards.
