FRONT AXLE — Drive Shaft (Disassembly / Inspection / Assembly)

CAUTION
The transaxle and wheel side joints can be removed, but not disassembled.
WHEEL SIDE
Wheel-side joint disassembly
- 1Remove boot bands.
- 2Put matching marks on joint housing and drive shaft before separating them.
UFA052 - 3Tap the inner race sharply with a soft hammer/copper drift to separate.
- 4Remove the boot. Remove all grease from the shaft.Cover drive shaft serration with tape so as not to damage the boot.
TRANSAXLE SIDE
The transaxle side joint cannot be removed. To replace the transaxle joint boot, remove the wheel side joint and damper for access to the boot.
To replace the damper, remove the wheel side joint (mark the damper location) and remove the damper. Lightly grease the inner surface of the damper before fitting. Fit new bands to the damper.
Inspection
CAUTION
Thoroughly clean all parts in cleaning solvent, and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of deformation or other damage.
DRIVE SHAFT
IMPORTANT
Replace drive shaft if it is twisted or cracked.
BOOT
IMPORTANT
Check boot for fatigue, cracks or wear. Replace boot with new boot bands.
JOINT ASSEMBLY
Inspect the joint for signs of scorching, rust, wear or excessive play.
Check slide joint housing for any damage. Replace if necessary.
Assembly
IMPORTANT
After drive shaft has been assembled, ensure that it moves smoothly over its entire range without binding.
Use NISSAN GENUINE GREASE or equivalent after every overhaul.
Ensure that correct amount of grease is inserted in correct proportions. DO NOT overfill or underfill.
